Modernism Week Roundup
Now THAT was fun. A weekend spent at the blissfully bright Saguaro Hotel in Palm Springs attending lectures, expos and parties all about modernism. Part of me felt like I hopped in a time machine back to 1964–the fantastically flat vintage modern houses, pastel-y hues, some truly amazing vintage pieces. I mean, that furry round love seat?!? I’d never seen (or sat in!) anything like it! Or how about that doorknob? It was on the front door of a modern home that was being completely gutted and remodeled. What I wouldn’t give to have a house like that to redesign. Dream project!
The highlight of my weekend was a lecture by Roman Alonso of the design studio Commune. They are responsible for the designs of the Ace Hotels, Heath Ceramics retails locations as well as many other amazing residential and retail spaces. One of the things that Roman discussed was how their main goal in designing interior spaces to is discover how their clients want to spend time in their spaces and to help their clients communicate what they’re trying to communicate. That really resonated with me. What do you think about looking at interior design as fostering flow and communication?
