Ideas to help us drink more water


I don’t drink enough water. I can’t ever seem to get the whole water bottle thing together and I simply forget to drink it. As a result my lips are often chapped, I sometimes even wake up with dehydration headaches. So as part of my healthy-transformation, I’ve made an effort to drink more water and I’ve implemented a few tricks that I find very useful. Since making these simple changes in my daily life, I find that I feel so much lighter, cleaner and fresher. So here goes:

  1. If anyone ever asks if they can get you anything (like if you are at a salon, a friend’s house or your accountant’s) ask for water. This sounds silly, but for whatever reason I was in the habit of declining when people ask if I want anything. Well not anymore!
  2. If you are at a restaurant or cafe, always ask for water
  3. If you are eating out and you are drinking something other than water, also drink a glass of water.
  4. Do not ever get up from a table until you’ve emptied your water glass.
  5. Drink one tall glass of water before bed and one tall glass of water first thing in the morning.

Following these simple steps I have double, or maybe even tripled my water consumption. If you eat out a lot like I do you’ll notice a change in your skin and your energy level immediately.

    Oh this is so me!! Over the years I have constantly tried to drink more (and failed!). The periods of success were down to this one tip. Fill a two litre bottle and put it on your desk. Drink a glass morning and night and at each meal and finish the bottle even if if means carrying it around! I find the visual reminder an encouragement and also a feeling of accomplishment!

    I noticed that I drink more water when I flavor it. For example, when I go workout, I cut a grapefruit in bits and add it to my water bottle. tastes extremely good! other than that, I made a habit of always taking a glass of water with me when I sit down on my work desk at home and on the kitchen table there’s alwaays a caraf with water and glasses.

    When I’m at a restaurant and they bring water I ask for a few slices of lemon then I add to my water or you can ask for a slice of Orange. You can also add a lil sweetner to water with lemon. If you’re having a salad from salad bar get some extra cucumber or some strawberries to add to water also!

    I have glasses of water all around the house. There is a glass near every chair and table, so it’s always one arm stretch away. Besides, I allow myself to buy cute colourful glasses, so it makes it very attractive to drink out of ;)

    I struggle with this too!! Thanks for the suggestions, I really need to try the whole drinking a glass before bed and when I wake up thing.

    Some other things that have helped me…
    1. Flavor water with lemon or cucumber.
    2. Get a cute bottle that is enjoyable to drink out of.
    3. Put crushed ice in the water – I love the crunch, and I find myself drinking more to get to the little bits of ice. (I’m sure it drives my co-workers nuts, though.)
    4. Make bargains with myself, like “I can only have the cup of coffee/glass of wine if I have another glass of water.”
    5. Keeping plants around the house and being conscious of their hydration needs helps remind me of my own!

    Carry a water bottle everywhere! Sip on it at red lights, before getting out of the car, whenever you have a second – every little bit helps meet the daily water goal!

    I have always had a problem with drinking water..never can get it down but drinking tea[all kinds]hot or cold with no sweetener is the only way I can do it.

    This is some good water advice, I drink lots of water but I’m sure I could drink more. The only problem I have is a tiny bladder! I try not to drink water during road trips (which is bad) because if I do we have to make multiple stops and I’m the only one who has to tinkle!

    I am awful at drinking water. The best way I’ve found to get in the right amount it to just slam a juice glass full once an hour, that I’m awake and at home. I always drink a 16 oz. glass right when I wake up though, usually because I feel like crap, but I can’t do the same before bed because then I wake up too early with a vicious need to pee, lol!

    I started taking a carafe of water along with my glass into my studio when I’m working. I picked up a few large bottles at ikea for under $5 each for parties, but realized that by having more water right there next to me means that I’ll keep filling my glass. I have been drinking so much more water this way!

    I drink a lot of water, and my biggest tip is to make it easy. I drive a lot, so I carry a 24-ounce Contigo bottle from Target with a silicone sippy thing, and a straw that goes all the way to the bottom, which means I don’t have to tilt the bottle so I can sip while I drive, and it fits just right in my cupholder.

  13. Thanks for your tips.I also tried with water-kefir drinks, at least one glass in the morning and one after dinner or before going to bed.

    I start the day with 8 colorful rubberbands on one wrist. Every glass of water I drink, I move a band to my other wrist.Hopefully by the end of the day they are all on the other wrist! Good reminder.

    You don’t need to drink so much water, you should only drink when your thirsty…. (advice from my dietician). I went on a detox diet health kick where I drank heaps of water or herbal tea and on advice from my dietician I stopped. I felt heaps better….. and reading more into it there is lots of advice that suggests you can over hydrate and dilute your own electrolyte balance. I know it goes against everything you have been told! but the way I look at it is the body is very good at telling you what it needs (for example certain food cravings when your pregnant). I felt the need to comment as this advice helped me so much!

  20. I’m on the other side on this =) I fear I drink too much water! I feel thirsty all the time and alway enjoy a few sip of this clear liquid. Maybe my keeping a bottle of water always by me helps me not to forget to.

  21. STRAWS! They work wonders. The best is those camelback bottles. But in a pinch any straw does the job. As soon as I stop using them I don’t drink a thing. I hate “sipping” water all day. makes me feel weird. But with straws you can gulp it down faster… Great post!

  22. These are some great ideas Justina! Now that I’m pregnant, it is more important than ever for me to drink more water, and I often forget too. I’m always running around at work and it’s just not something I think about. I don’t mind the taste of water though, especially when it’s cold. I’ll definitely be using these tips! :)
