When I tell people that Jason and I are starting to look for a house to buy they are surprised. Everyone assumes that we already own the house we live in.  I think it’s because I put in so much time, energy, love and so many holes in the walls! (Luckily our landlord is awesome). There is really only one area that (until now) I avoided adding my personal touch to (because it just seemed like too much of a hassle for a rental) and that’s changing the light fixtures.  Every time I walked into the house and saw the existing sconce on the wall I cringed a little bit. (You can see the old sconce in this pic) I hated it so much, in fact that when I photographed the gallery wall a couple of weeks ago–I digitally remastered it out of the photo(see!?) And once I did that, I knew it just had to go.

I had fun choosing a new light fixture and after weeks of searching I decided on this sconce from Euro Style Lighting.  I love that it’s brass (so much more my vibe than stainless steel). I love that it looks tropical, and 70’s and kind of bamboo-like–so jungalicious. And it adds so much more light into the room–it’s crazy. It actually C H A N G E S the colors in the living room–making everything even brighter and happier. I can’t tell you what a big difference it made!! Sometimes a small detail can really make a huge difference–and I’m a believer in turning a house into a home, rental or not. I’m so glad I finally swapped it out. And I’ll just take the lights with me when we do finally buy a place. It’s a bit addicting though, so watch out–now I wanna swap out every light in my jungalow for something swanky and awesome.

Do you make your rental feel like your home?  What are things that you’d change even though you know that you don’t own the home?

  1. Hi Justina,
I’ve landed on your blog from who knows where now…that’s what happens when I don’t feel like working in my studio, lol…but I’m so glad I did. Love your colourful Bohemian style. I’m very much Bohemian myself …apart from having been born in Prague and a bit of a Euro-city mouse….I also love to mix it up. Glad you’ll take the light with you. Funny story, I’ve got a bit of a chandelier which I’ve “lost” thru four house sales but which has always found its way back to me. Amazing light is probably going to stick with me for the rest of my life. Anyway, off now to read more of you posts.

Yes! Light is so important. I hate the fans in my current house…. but that is too big of an investment for a rental. But, I did paint all of the fake wood paneling in the bedrooms when I moved in – it was tons of work, and a bit of an investment, but it was SO worth it.

We rent our apartment, and unfortunately our landlord is not so great about letting us change things. We live in a creole-style house in the French Quarter so although the outside is a beautiful sunshine yellow, the inside is all plain cream walls. The closest I’ve got to making it our own is framing a bunch of old bookplates and hanging them on the wall. And I have a feeling our landlord won’t be too happy about those holes when we leave!

I would LOVE to add some more colour by painting the door and window frames, and hanging some more art. And maybe even paint the cupboard doors in the kitchen. Yes, those are painted the same colour as the walls.

All the houses in the Quarter are painted such beautiful colours, and when you walk into our building it’s like all the life has been sucked from the world!

Haha, this is a subject close to my heart. I am always balancing when to stop improving on a rental and when to go ahead and make it beautiful. My #1 thing to change when I move in is always the shower head though. A little instant luxury for the time I’m there and I swap em’ out when I leave!

  5. i especially love this post because i am so happy that you love your ojo!!! also, i totally photoshopped the light fixture out of my fireplace picture that i submitted to you- ha! i live with terrible fixtures in every room except for the dining area at the moment and i got a friend who is a professional to look after that. i know how you feel- i would so love to change them all.

I have finally brought a home, and I still have a really, really nasty light fitting in our sitting room… I mean really bad!!

I know what you mean about light fixtures that you don’t like…..but I love the choice you made to replace it.

  8. Hi there all, here every one is sharing such know-how, thus it’s fastidious to read this weblog, and I used to visit this webpage everyday.

  9. I’m amazed, I have to admit. Rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and engaging, and without a doubt, you have hit the nail on the head.
The problem is something too few folks are speaking intelligently about.
Now i’m very happy that I found this in my search
    for something regarding this.
