New Work: Nicole Brown’s Eclectic, Worldly WeHo Home
Photos by Jessica Comingore.
When Nicole came to me for design help, she said: When I first moved in, I was so busy, I just bought kinda plain safe stuff and now it’s time to add a layer of personality to it. I hope we don’t have to replace too much of what I have, but I’m really open to hearing your thoughts…
After hearing that–I knew this would be a fun project–’cause if there’s one thing my spaces always have in common–it’s personality!
Nicole’s home is a great space–nice natural light, large rooms–and her furniture was plain but not offensive–it was easy for me to build upon what she had to inject a fun, worldly feel to her abode.
The vintage Matisse print found at the Rosebowl Flea was one of the first pieces that I got her–it set a fun tone for the whole living room. Adding a few ikat throw pillows from One Kings Lane and terracotta pots full of succulents tied in the orange from the existing club chairs to the rest of the space. An accent wall was created by installing an ikat print wallpaper. A glass and chrome coffee table was replaced with a large wooden Indian table–a true statement piece. Adding additional art pieces, plants, the vintage kantha throw and a wooden Indonesian bench gave Nicole’s home that personality she was looking for.
In the bedroom, what was formally a blank wall, became a gallery wall with pops of yellow (one of Nicole’s favorite colors). Art pieces and prints from artists I adore like Lisa Cogdon and Sarah and Bendrix were added along with a slightly smaller bench that I had painted yellow. The opposite wall in the bedroom got a ikat wallpaper treatment as well–this time with more neutral colors. New lampshades and bedding were added to her existing pieces, (including the gorgeous Moroccan Wedding Blanket Nicole picked up on a trip to Morocco in December). New curtains were a final touch.
Now with an eclectic, worldly feel and a whole lotta personality, I couldn’t be happier with the way the space came out. And I think (and hope!) Nicole is as thrilled as I am.
Thanks Nicole for trusting me with your home, and thank you Jessica, for the lovely photographs!
